A new round of 1.8 million $1,400 stimulus checks was sent to Americans, the IRS announced this May 26. The number of payments for the third stimulus so far amounts to 167 million, for a total of $391 billion.
Since Congress approved the American Rescue Plan in March, the IRS, the Treasury Department, and the Office of the Tax Service have announced the new rounds of direct payments weekly, but this time the new round began shipping for two weeks. Checks have an effective payment date of March 26.
WHO GETS NEW ROUND OF STIMULUS CHECK
Half of the payments for this new round of stimulus dated March 26 went to people that the IRS had no up-to-date information about and who recently filed their tax return.
More than 900,000 additional plus-uppayments were also sent, which are issued to individuals who received an initial check based on their 2019 tax returns, but are eligible to receive more money according to their 2020 tax return.
Individuals are eligible for that type of payment if they earned less in 2020 than in 2019, or claimed a new child or dependent on the 2020 return.
The new round also includes 900,000 payments in the form of a direct deposit, for a total of $1.6 billion.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVEN’T RECEIVED THE THIRD STIMULUS CHECK
The IRS recommends that individuals who do not normally make a tax return file the 2020 tax return now to get the benefits they are eligible for, including the 2020 Recovery Repayment Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Haven’t done your taxes yet? If you’re due an #IRS refund, there’s no penalty for filing late. But if you do owe, penalties and interest are now accruing on any remaining unpaid tax due. Learn more from this #IRSTaxTip: https://t.co/2eB0Aq1TVE pic.twitter.com/EvZAeTDDQL

Those who are beneficiaries of Social Security payments and have not received the third check must file a 2020 tax return now for the IRS to have their most recent information, including qualified dependents. If you are owed a refund, there is no penalty for filing your tax return late.
The IRS has also been sending unemployment refunds to individuals who can benefit from tax exemptions approved as part of the third stimulus package. Those who last year were unemployed and earning less than $150,000 do not have to pay taxes for the first $10,200 they have received for unemployment benefits.
