According to an IRS report, more than 35 million refunds remain unprocessed.
While tax season ended more than a month ago, the IRS is still behind schedule in its refund processes for millions of people.
But how serious is this delay? According to figures from the IRS’s National Taxpayer Advocate Center, this delay has caused about 35.7 million people to still remain without their 2020 tax refunds.
Of these 35.7 million, the center details that 17 million have not yet been processed, 16 million have been put on hold to be analyzed by hand and 2.7 million amended taxes have not yet been reviewed.
“In some cases, refunds are stuck between functions (for example, between the return integrity check operation and the exam). As of September 24, 2020, 20% of refunds processed in 2019 had not yet reached their recipients,” the report said.
The report comes a month after the IRS revealed that millions of refunds from the 2019 and 2020 tax seasons were “virtually suspended” due to an internal error.
Unlike in previous years, the IRS detailed that on 2020 returns, 70% received some form of tax refund, which on average was equivalent to $2,800 per filer.
The agency noted that despite delays in refunds, monthly Child Tax Credit payments are expected to be issued on time and efficiently like stimulus checks.
