The IRS continues to hand out the third stimulus check, but how much money has the government agency sent in stimulus since 2020?
It has been more than a year since the United States was hit by a severe labor and economic crisis arising from the still dormant coronavirus outbreak.
Since then, the American Union government has approved three economic bailouts, two during the administration of former President Donald Trump and the most recent during the administration of current White House leader President Joe Biden.
Each of these economic bailouts has brought with it a round of stimulus checks, which was distributed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
How much money has the IRS sent in stimulus checks since 2020?
The first economic bailout ran under the name CARES Act and was approved in March 2020. Through this, a $1,200 stimulus check round was offered for individuals ($2,400 pairs) to more than 160 million beneficiaries totaling $270 billion.
By December 2020, the Trump Administration passed a new $900 billion covid-19 relief bill. With this, the IRS had until January 15 to send payments corresponding to the second stimulus check, which was $600 for individuals ($1,200 couples). In total, the government agency distributed 147 million payments totaling more than $142 billion.
Three months later, in March 2021, the Biden Administration approved the American Rescue Plan. Thanks to this new package, the IRS is handing out a third $1,400 stimulus check for individuals ($2,800 pairs). To date, more than 165 million beneficiaries have received payment in a timely way.
The American Rescue Plan has a budget of $450 billion for stimulus checks,of which about 86% has already been distributed.
